Claudel began sculpting as a teenager living with her family outside Paris. Encouraged by her first teacher, sculptor Alfred Boucher, the family moved to the city in so that she might study art. Claudel attended classes at the Académie Colarossi, one of the few art schools that allowed women to study nude models.
